What happened
The Philistine army gathered for battle against the Israelites in the Valley of Elah. A warrior named Goliath challenged the Israelites to send a man to fight him. For forty days, no soldier accepted the challenge.
David, the youngest son of Jesse, arrived at the camp to bring food to his older brothers. When he heard Goliath defying the armies of Israel, he offered to fight the warrior. King Saul offered David his armor, but David declined because he had not tested it.
David approached Goliath with his shepherd staff, five smooth stones, and a sling. When Goliath mocked him, David answered that he came in the name of the Lord. David struck Goliath in the forehead with a single stone, winning the battle for Israel.
